Stasher Bags vs (Re)Zip Bags

Reusable zippie bags are a great way to reduce single-use plastic waste. But which one is right for you? There are so many different brands on the market (which is amazing!) but sometimes it might be hard to choose. Below I review and highlight some key differences between two popular brands, Stasher Bags and (re)Zip Bags.

Let’s start with Stasher bags because I see these everywhere! Stasher bags are made from platinum silicone and are free of BPA, BPS, lead, latex, and phthalates. You’re able to use these bags in the freezer, microwave, oven, stovetop, sous vide, and dishwasher. So they’re super versatile and you’re able to do a lot with them.

I personally have one sandwich bag and a one-gallon size bag and have really enjoyed my experience using them so far. I use the gallon size bag to store my veggie scraps and am able to store a lot of scraps in there and still seal it completely. I use the sandwich bag for snacks on the go and fruits and veggies and it also works great for that. It’s very easy to seal and I like how durable the material feels. However, I will say that they are a bit pricey. One single sandwich bag costs $12.99. If we compare that to a (re)Zip bag of a similar size, it costs $8.99 for a pack of two or $19.99 for a pack of five. The price points on these are very different but there are some differences in what the (re)Zip bags can do.

(re)Zip bags are made from FDA-grade PEVA material which is food safe, free of BPA and lead, and are recyclable. These bags are safe for the freezer, however they are not safe for high heat usage. Unlike Stasher bags where you can use them in the microwave, oven, stovetop, sous vide, (re)Zip bags are not heat safe. That is a big difference between these two bags and something you should consider to help make your decision of which bag is right for you.

Looking at the material of both bags, the Stasher bag is a thicker material than the (re)Zip bag. Based on that, I would make the assumption that the Stasher bag may last longer than the (re)Zip. However, I’ve been using the (re)Zip for 2 years now so it is very well-loved and still going strong! It has been in the freezer several times, taken on road trips, on the go, you name it, and it is still working great so I can attest to its durability.

Overall from my experience, both bags work great and are solid options to reduce single-use plastic. It ultimately comes down to how you want to use the bags and your budget. Again, Stasher bags are heat safe so if you plan to use them in the microwave, oven, stovetop, sous vide, that’s the bag for you. If you’re just looking for some snack and sandwich bags, (re)Zip might be a better option since they come in bundles that cost less.

Personally, I’m going to get another Stasher bag to make microwavable popcorn in; I’m a big popcorn fan and love the idea of using a reusable bag every now and again instead of making it on the stovetop (I’m known for making too much haha) But if I need more bags to freeze fruit or for snacks then I’d definitely opt for a pack of (re)Zip bags. Again, I’ve enjoyed my experience using both bags, but it ultimately comes down to your preference of usage and price point.
