4 Tips for a Greener Halloween

Costumes, decorations, pumpkin carving, and candy - spooky season is here! Let’s talk about a few easy and fun ways to make it sustainable:

1. Local Pumpkins

I've been carving pumpkins for as long as I remember! If pumpkin carving is a tradition for you too, here's 3 ways to make this fun activity a little more sustainable:

1. Buy locally! Make a trip to the pumpkin patch and buy local pumpkins. Buying local produce has less of a carbon footprint since there's less transporting involved. Plus, who doesn't love a cute pumpkin patch photo-op?

2. Roast the seeds! I have to say, my dad is the master seed roster. We always save the seeds that we scoop out and dad would take care of the rest. Little bit of olive oil, little bit of salt, some time in the over and *chef’s kiss* the delicious seeds are ready to enjoy!

3. Compost your pumpkin! When it's time to part ways with our beloved pumpkins, compost if you can! If you’re not currently composting, see if you have a community garden near you that you can drop them off at or if your area has a pumpkin composting option for the season. 2. Decorations

What do wine corks, empty candle containers, and glass jars have in common? They all can be used for low waste Halloween decorations! No but seriously, check out my blog 5 Fall DIY Decorations to see what I’m talking about, and let me know which one is your favorite!

3. Costumes

I may be 25 years old, but you best believe I still love dressing up for Halloween! If you do too consider these eco-friendly costume ideas: thrift or make it, get creative with what you have, borrow from friends.

Even if you thrift, make, or borrow even part of your costume that still makes a difference! For more inspo read my blog: 3 Eco-Friendly Halloween Costume Ideas or watch my YouTube video where I chat more about this!

4. Candy

Many people (myself included!) look forward to all the yummy Halloween treats! If you can, try to buy locally produced or fair trade candies and treats. Or try to find treats with lower waste packaging like candy in paper boxes or wrapped in foil! This year I bought organic lollipops and Halloween fruit snacks in my Imperfect Foods box which is another option as well.

No matter what kind of treats you get, be sure to dispose of them properly. Littering is spooky for the environment.
